Zebra Finch
Check out Australia Zoo’s Zebra Finch
The Zebra Finch is a fascinating bird, with distinct stripes on its chest, that give its signature name. Keep your eyes peeled in our Grace’s Bird Garden for these adorable birds, as they can be spotted exploring their home.
Typically, Zebra Finches can be found in the drier parts of Australia, living in to large flocks of up to 100! They are the most common type of grassland finches found on our mainland, and are also found in the Lesser Sunda Islands and Timor. They feed on ripening grass seeds, as well as insects when they are feeding their young.
These gorgeous little birds pair for life! Both the female and male Zebra Finch are great parents and share the responsibility of caring for their young. Once hatched, it only takes 70-80 days for the chick to be ready to find a mating partner. This makes them one of the fastest maturing bird species recorded!
The Zebra Finch is doing well in Australia, and the population is actually increasing with the greater access they have to water sources (water tanks etc.) from humans!
